Parole and probation are alike in that they involve supervised releases. However, the state of Florida virtually abolished parole back in 1983. Parole, therefore, now only applies to crimes committed before that date. Very few offenders, hence, are put on parole now, considering that it has been in excess of forty years since this change was enacted. Cases of continued relevance for parole are very few and far between and relate to offenses of a considerably older vintage.

Despite the variations in their operation, there are a few elements common to both parole and probation. Both involve supervision by an officer, and those subject to a parole or probation order are under comparable reporting obligations and standards of behavior. These may involve regular check-ins with the officer, maintaining employment, avoiding criminal or antisocial behaviors, and other conditions that will be imposed upon by the court. Any violation of these can result in serious consequences such as violations that will add to more penalties, which may include imprisonment.
