What is an ignition interlock device?

An ignition interlock device is a piece of equipment that is placed in someone’s car typically as a condition of probation or as a condition of their being able to drive through DMV which requires that someone blow into an instrument that detects whether or not there’s alcohol in their system. If the interlock device detects alcohol, it prevents the car from actually turning over, so the car will not turn on if it detects alcohol. It’s very commonly something that is used as a condition of probation after a DUI conviction, particularly if there are prior DUI arrest.
