The difference between a murder charge and a manslaughter charge really revolves around the intent of the individual who committed the crime. In terms of a murder charge, you are typically talking about intent to kill and that usually is very clear or at least somewhat more straightforward. Whereas a manslaughter type charge, the intent requirement is different. The mindset of the individual who committed the act is different and that’s really what denotes the difference in terms of the significance. In the end, they are both homicide offenses. Someone died as a result of them but the real distinction is on the intent of the individual who committed the act.
