Nearly Three Decades as Sheriff
Dale Carson’s path to becoming one of Jacksonville’s longest-serving sheriffs began in 1958.
After serving as an FBI agent, Carson was appointed sheriff of the Duval County Road Patrol by Florida Governor LeRoy Collins. He would go on to be reelected seven times, serving the Jacksonville community until his retirement in 1986.
But those dates only tell part of the story.
Carson’s years in office came during a transformative period for Jacksonville. The city was navigating the civil rights era, rapid growth and a movement to fundamentally change the way local government operated.
One of the biggest changes was just around the corner.
A New Era for Jacksonville Law Enforcement
In 1967, Jacksonville and Duval County voters approved the consolidation of city and county government. The change officially took effect on October 1, 1968.
For local law enforcement, consolidation meant bringing together two previously separate agencies: the Duval County Road Patrol and the Jacksonville Police Department. Together, they formed a unified law enforcement agency that became commonly known as the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Dale Carson remained sheriff of the newly combined agency.
It was a defining moment for Jacksonville. Instead of separate city and county systems, consolidation created a new structure for local government and law enforcement across much of Duval County.
Carson would continue leading the Sheriff’s Office for another 18 years before retiring in 1986.
