What is a pre-sentence investigation report and what is it used for in Florida?

A pre-sentence investigation report, commonly known as a PSI, is a document that is generated by a probation officer for purposes of making a sentencing recommendation, to either a judge or a prosecutor. In the pre-sentence investigation report, the probation officer is going to review a number of things related to the case. He or she is going to review things such as educational background, criminal history, the specifics of the offense, and other circumstances related to the defendant so that, that can be encapsulated in a document that is given to the judge or the prosecutor to give them a snapshot into a defendant’s life, and allow them to understand where the defendant is and where they have been, so that they can use that to fashion an appropriate sentence.
