Florida now treats certain extreme speeding cases as criminal offenses, not just traffic tickets. Under Florida’s dangerous excessive speeding law, drivers can be charged if they exceed the posted speed limit by 50 mph or more, or drive 100 mph or more in a way that threatens the safety of others or property.
A conviction can lead to serious penalties. A first offense may result in up to 30 days in jail, a $500 fine, or both. Repeat offenses can bring up to 90 days in jail, a $1,000 fine, and possible driver’s license revocation if another violation occurs within five years. In many cases, drivers must also appear in court instead of simply paying a ticket.
Because these charges can carry criminal consequences and put your license and driving record at risk, it’s important to speak with an experienced traffic defense lawyer as soon as possible. A knowledgeable attorney may be able to challenge how the speed was measured, identify errors in the citation, negotiate reduced charges, or work toward dismissal depending on the circumstances of your case.
Most drivers don’t realize that simply paying a traffic ticket is the same as pleading guilty, and that decision can add points to your driving record. Those points may lead to higher insurance rates, status as a habitual traffic offender, suspension of your license, or even the loss of your driving privileges. In other words, the real cost of a ticket is often far greater than the fine itself.
At Dale Carson Law, we recommend fighting every traffic ticket. In court, a skilled attorney can challenge the facts of your case, expose mistakes made by the citing officer, and work to reduce or dismiss the charges.
